The
Nantlle Valley:
The Nantlle Valley once boasted the most number of slate mines situated
within one valley - and one visit there will leave you in no doubt
as to the importance of the industry not only on the valley but
the whole region as well. Scooped, scarred hillsides lie next to
unspoilt sheep pastures and terraced cottages share the valley with
small farmsteads, the entire scene presided over by high, challenging
mountains. The view of Snowdon from the valley is generally regarded
as the best and both Turner and Wilson took advantage of this. The
ghost of the once great Dorothea quarry is now a Mecca for divers
since the flooded quarry plummets hundreds of feet into the valley
floor here - but extreme care should be taken if diving here since
he incidences divers suffering the bends is much higher than average.
