MACHYNLLETH:
Machynlleth is better known for being the first capital of a free
Wales, with Owain Glyndwr holding his first parliament there in
1404. Today at the Owain Glyndwr Centre housed in a house built
on the site of the original parliament there are exhibitions and
displays about the life and achievments of the prince. Opposite
the paliament house stands Plas Machynlleth built by the Marquess
of Londonderry, who also built the clock tower in the centre of
the town. This is now the site of the Celtica Experience which
follows the history of the Celts over the last three thousand
years - it has interactive exhibitions, audiovisual tours and
several exhibits which are all family-friendly.
In
the middle of town stands Y Tabrnacl which is the home of the
Wales Museum of Modern Art and hosts an ongoing programme of temporary
exhibitions ncluding some from its own collection.
Machynlleth
is a natural stopping point fro north-south travellers in Wales
and has plenty of cafes and restaurants to satisfy every palate
- and there is a distinct 'green' feeling to much of the shops
in the town.
This
eco-friendy atmosphere is underlined by the Centre For Alternative
Tachnology a few miles outside Machynlleth - this is a working
and practical example of how the resources of the natural world
can be harnessed ina an effective way. The centre is well worth
a visit because it combines education with a good appreciation
of fun and entertainment.
