Prehistoric
Monuments
Note that archaeological finds from the prehistoric period can be
observed in Oriel Mon (Llangefni) and Oriel Gwynedd (Bangor).
Neolithic
Sites
The greatest majority of Neolithic sites in Britain, as in Gwynedd,
are represented by burial monuments in which the burial chambers
are built of massive supporting stones and imposing cap stones.
These megalithic chambers are often all that remain visible whereas
originally the chamber would have been incorporated into long
stone and earthen mounds measuring between 100 and 250 feet in
length. A collective burial rite was practised in the Neolithic
with the tombs containing the disarticulated bones of between
25 and 50 individuals. Today these monuments represent the earliest
visible architectural tradition in Britain and date from the period
4000- 2500 BC.
